Outdoor and nature connected Play Therapy

What to expect if you get in contact with me
-
Initially you (parent or carer or professional of a child) can arrange a phone call of ~30 minutes. This call is free, and is an opportunity to work out if Play Therapy (and my space) is the right intervention for your child at this time. I don't want to offer false hope if it's not the right fit.
-
From there we may decide to organise an (Ideally) in-person (still just adults at this point) assessment meeting of up to an hour where a longer discussion of a child's history and presenting difficulties can take place, as well as a more in depth conversation about the process and what to expect.
-
We can then arrange a meeting with the child- initially this can take place with a carer, but can become the first play session if appropriate.
-
From there we can decide on a course of sessions. Usually I'll do an initial 6 sessions before having a review to confirm that the child is engaging with the therapy. In total 18-24 sessions is a common length of time for play therapy interventions, but this will depend on the individual and presenting concerns.
-
It is usual to have review meetings or calls with parents every 6-8 weeks to discuss progress both at home and in sessions.

-
The sessions themselves will last 50 minutes, in which the adult who has dropped off the child will usually be waiting in the car (or going on a short walk if you wish!). The child and I will then either stay in the cabin or head out into the woods. We may get messy or muddy. During the assessment I will provide guidance on appropriate clothing at different times of year.

Play Therapy is always child led, so there is no 'programme' to follow or specific planned activities. We trust the child to play in the ways that they need to, given a safe relationship to do it within. My role is to create this safe 'container' and respond in appropriate therapeutic ways to what the child brings to the sessions.
